Trisha, piggybacking on what Jim said about Christopher Paul Curtis's
work, you might look into _Spite Fences_. It's a great novel by Kirshner
about racism. Good to pair with _Roll of Thunder_. "Uplifting" is so
ambiguous. I find young adults successfully dealing with realistic
conficts to be uplifting... But you might also look into such things as:
_The Skin I'm In_, _Searching for David's Heart_. For short stories, what
about "The Gift of the Magi"? Not exactly prime literature would be the
_Chicken Soup_ books as an alternative, too.
