Cari - Wow! And you still like the poem after all
that analyzing and dissecting! There's an English
major for you!

. . . which makes me think of Billy Collins'
"Introduction to Poetry" and his wonderful lines "But
all they want to do/ is tie the poem to a chair with
rope/ and torture a confession out of it.// They begin
beating it with a hose/ to find out what it really
means."

So there's another poem with metaphor, yes? Most of
my students get that one without too much
interpretation, laughing and cheering, while I, the
English teacher, hang my head and trudge dilligently
onward, promoting deeper thought and analyzation. ha.
