teaching expression and intonation

just some thought....

Sometimes I would have each person read the same passage in class, starting with
volunteers, then the better readers, to finally the slower readers...by the end
of the class, the slower readers have heard the words pronounced enough times and
seen others mess up, etc., that they feel comfortable doing their part.  Then I
would assign separate pieces...allowing for practice in small goups. 

Perhaps using hand puppets (hiding behind a screen) and reading something
elementary with an opportunity for some of the readers going to a lower grade and
reading for one of the classes there.

Getting the better readers to help the others...extra credit for both persons. 
There is something on the inside of a poor reader that has to be addressed for
him/her to take that scary first step.

At the first of school, have students take turns coming to the front of the room
and just stand there correctly for one minute.  The next week, stand for
2-minutes.  Finally 3-minutes.  Train them for sense of time and a feeling of
confidence.
