I've been reading the posts on the plagiarism problem and detection sites.
Have had that "teachable moment" as you wryly put it, Cathy. How do varous
schools/teachers handle this when detected, I wonder? I scared the students silly
prior to larger research assignments by reading the H.S. policy on plagiarism
(F or 0 on item, first offense, F or 0 for class second offense -- not sure
how thoroughly and consistly that is applied, though), and referencing the
situation of those whose college careers or degrees were jeapardized through the
determination of plagiarism. In another situation, I allowed a student to
redo the assignment with a certain # of points reduced.
I think as bad as plagiarism are the situationa when a parent does the work
for the child, and you can absolutely tell it is not the child's work
(vocabulary level, sentence construction, sophistication of thinking). It is very very
hard to get to the bottom of it. I have had two students in recent years
whose mom's were so obviously doing their work at home. How have others handled
this kind of issue?
Gwen
