does she draw? if so, you could have her illustrate some scenes.

another idea (if she, for instance, likes to write poetry) would be to identify themes and write some poetry with strong imagery.

i read the book quite a while ago, but i remember that the setting was vivid, as was the emotional quality of the book.

you might even have her combine poetry and drawing, or just color, to make a response to the book. maybe talk to her with some ideas and see what she responds to.

Help - I'm a bit stuck and need some guidance.

I have a student who is a very, very bright girl (8th grade) who tends to go way beyond what I ask of her. I want to give her an alternative assignment while the rest of the class works on skills she has already mastered; we are looking at about two weeks - or seven lessons. She recently finished In the Time of the Butterflies, and I want to have her "do something" (awful expression, I know) with it, preferably that minimizes paragraph-and-essay writing and maximizes other kinds of expression. The reason she is doing this alternative assignment is that I want her to nurture some of her other skills, not just her nonfiction writing abilities; her seatmate claims she is very creative, although she demurs about this. Off the top of your heads, does anyone have a creative idea I could pick up and run with. I am feeling very dull and need a jump-start.

Thanks so much,
Stephanie
