Debra,

For generating discussions in student run groups, why not start with a read
aloud? I've had good luck with Walter Dean Myers' The Story of the Three
Kingdoms. The story itself is a great illustration of how team work generates
rich ideas. I also asked my students to generate "fat" questions, which led to
a discussion of "fat" vs "skinny" questions. Sometimes practice in asking
and answering questions stimulates worthwhile discussions.

After practice and team building experience (lots of good suggestions this
morning), the students and I generated the criteria for a five star
(outstanding), three star (good), and one star ( poor) student led discussion. I
usually combined the suggestions from all of my classes. Having shared criteria
allowed the students to evaluate their own discussions.

Good luck!
Kathie Ramsey
