Holly,
It looks like your wisdom and experience is being sought---something I found less and less the norm the longer I was in the m.s. classroom. Also, from your additions to the conversation, I think your interview team will want to look at how the candidates view the push to formulaic writing vs. more authentic writing grounded in students' experiences. You mentioned grammar, too. How have/might the candidates teach grammar within the context of writing?

Some of the interview team's considerations of candidates also will likely depend on the level of concern about state testing, candidates' knowledge of assessment in general, the size of the school district, the level of diversity among students and present faculty, and many more complexities. As someone suggested (Nancy V?), candidates who are famililar with the school building, school system, and its needs are a plus--but not necessarily if this means a change in the candidates' personal philosophy of teaching.

I agree that going with the gut feeling is a strong consideration, but even when a candidate is selected by a team and the name and team's report sent to the superintendent/school board, the outcome of whom is selected may change.

Good luck ,Holly. Your reflections following the whole process may be as beneficial as selecting the candidate.

Mary Anna

I appreciate all responses. There are some questions I didn't even think
of. Apparently, I've been "appointed" to be the dept chair for my middle
school. So that is what I've been asked to help out. We are trying to
build a stronger language arts dept where more writing is being done in the
classroom.

Susie -- THAT is the list! You are a terrific Finder
of Things! I'll bet you searched for something like
"interview questions!" Gosh! (uttered in Napoleon
Dynamite speak!)

I have now copied this list into a Word document and
filed it in its own folder within my School folder and
titled it Interviews. Thanks!

Nancy
