I recommend, The Glory Field, by Walter Dean Myers. This book is the young
adult version of Roots. It tells the story of one African American family
from their capture in Africa all the way through to the 1970's. Yes, your
struggling readers will freak when they see the size of the book, but it's
written in sections by generations and if they will just see it as reading one
section at a time, they will finish it. I have had so many students tell me how
proud they are that they finished. It's an excellent story. The students see
the connections, the effects of historical events. This is my favorite book
to share with students. There are many teaching materials available, too.
