Re: Writing for State Assessments
Barry Lane is fantastic. I have attended several of his workshops and seen
him at conference.
Jeff Anderson's Mechanically Inclined is also another great book to use for
mini lessons.
My Bible is Acts of Teaching by Joyce Armstrong Carroll and Edward Wilson.
Kelly Gallagher has a new book out called Teaching Adolescent Writers. My
teachers are raving about him--they just attended a workshop with him.
Gretchen Bernebei's books are also fantastic. (She's a good friend of Barry
Lane.) Her Reviving the Essay is a top notch book for assessment writing.
Good Luck!!

Sherry,
If you do get enough copies and begin a study group, you might want to
consider the purchase of Barry's DVD/Video kit called Hooked on Meaning;
Writing Craft Video Lessons that Improve Achievement on Writing Tests
Through Authentic Instruction. We had him as a speaker at our local
conference just over a year ago. It was one of the bvest presentaitons I
have ever attended. Much of what he spoke is contained in the kit. It
comes with a Teacher's Guide as well as reproducible overheads. I have
used it successfully with my teachers and once or twice with classes.

An absolute necessity is Barry Lane's After the End. I've asked my
principal
to get copies for each of our Language Arts teachers next year with the
intent
of forming a study group.
