Cathy

Wishing you the best of luck!

Working on my National Board certification made the world of difference in
my teaching... I assure you that all of the work will be totally be worth it!

Portfolios:
The support classes are essential... they keep you focused on a timeline...
toward the end (after Christmas) time truly flies... and the stress is
incredible.

If you start with the standards... then examine each portfolio entry, build
the entire paper around the standards. Make it completely evident that you
met EACH standard... since that is what you are being scored on.

Testing:
My weakness was ELL... I used online sources...but I wish I had started it
much sooner to internalize it. Don't forego the "easier" material such as the
basic English Lit terms... since I had already had a strong background in
them... I neglected them prior to the testing... and blanked out on two terms...
came up with one, but merely described the other (not remembering it until I
was outside in my car!) The stress of a timed test was trying on my
nerves... but your technology skills will give you an edge in this... I know
teachers who NEVER use a computer that repeatedly fail this section... a lack of
computer skills is truly a deterrent from achieving success.

Congratulations on starting such a phenomenal endeavor!
Always
Sandi

Hi all~

Just wondering how many NBCTs/candidates we have in our midst. For those
of
you who have been through it: can you share any advice/suggested
readings/resources for someone embarking on the process this year?

I've applied for EAELA and have just completed several days' worth of
support classes, which were quite informative and helpful. But I would
certainly
welcome and appreciate any expertise which the wise folks on this board
might
be willing to share.

I've decided my first step will be to immerse myself fully in the NBPTS
material over the next few weeks, but I find myself having some initial
concerns
about the assessment center questions and want to begin working on my weak
areas, too. I do have not any specialized training in diagnosing reading
problems nor do I have any training/experience with ELL students.

Any direction or feedback is most appreciated!!!
Cathy
