If I had to put it in one sentence, I'd say literacy means the ability to
decipher, understand, make meaning, and foster connections from and between
written or visual texts.

Vital skills: the ability to communicate effectively in a variety of ways
(written, oral, electronic, visual), to listen, to look for meaning, and most
of all, the ability to think.
