I am leaving for Lake Tahoe in about 10 minutes, but I wanted to respond
because I have some strong opinions on this topic. I teach English
language learners. My ELL's have access to reading that they wouldn't
have access to without tapes because their listening comprehension
(often, but not always)is far better than their reading comprehension (I
work with "long-term" bilinguals). They don't just listen....They are
required to follow along in their books, and I walk around to make
certain that their fingers or bookmarks are where they tape is. Also,
we often reread sections of what we read with the tape to find evidence
for something, etc. We just finished The Giver which my kids loved (I
did lots of scaffolding). They could not have gotten through it without
the tape. I think tapes hold great promise for kids with poor reading
comprehension, and I would love to see some research on using audio
books in the classroom. Hurriedly.....

How do you feel about using audio books or texts of a short story, poem

novel in the classroom to increase comprehension and vocabulary
acquisition?
I am doing research for a possible thesis topic. Does it even merit
discussion? So many teachers that I've talked to believe that it makes
reading too easy for students.
