I have a friend at another school who uses audiobooks right before lunch; she has a brief period like a homeroom, and the procedure is that they finish any necessary business, then get to listen to the audiobook. And, she tells the kids she has chosen the book for pure enjoyment, no assignments attached. It calms down the kids, they are still learning, they are exposed to more literature (the kids start to equate books with enjoyment), and it makes the coming and going from lunch much easier!
