Re: Using audiobooks/texts



Mary, I agree whole-heartedly with your endorsement of audio books. It helps give some students the boost that they cannot get on their own. I battle with other teachers about using audio books. I don't want kids to be reliant on always hearing reading, and I have seen that happen purely from elementary school teachers reading aloud. I was never taught from oral reading and had to teach myself how to comprehend without silent reading. There needs to be a balance.

i think it's a wonderful 'scaffold' for some students. for students who
stumble over text it allows them to listen fluently. it increases their
listening comprehension, their vocabulary, their knowledge of text
structure, and if they're following along looking at the words as they read,
it may impact their ability to recognize words and spelling patterns.
