Re: end-of-the-year catch-up

Gwen,

Since all of the students who are selected for the panel have partiicpated in writing the initial reviews (the first one is required of all), I did little to prepare them. They had seen the published versions and through direct instruciton about the style they follow, they knew what to expect. To my astonishment, in their first meeting they devleoped a scoring rubric for the reviews that they used uniformly to score. They also decided to have each review read at least twice after finding that three readings were too much to expect from their own group. This was actually their project and they allowed me to come along for the ride and gently chide those who were in danger of missing scoring deadlines or meetings. I  just got them started. They picked it up and ran with it. We did this for four years azdn were pretty lucky at getting published in Voices. All it took was that first publication acceptance to get all of the students to redouble their efforts.
It sure beat reading all those book reports that they had fudged anyway. Being an ex-fudger myself (I did read some of the books) I can usally see thorugh their bluffs.
Jim

To Dayle - I echo Jim's response to you. Congratulations on a strong first
ear, and increasingly stronger years to follow. Awesome
o Jim - What a lovely, gracious letter you wrote. I liked your book review
dea modeled on Voices from the Middle, and your student editorial panel. How
o you go about preparing your panel for their tasks?
