[WWWEDU] Cyber-Safe Kids, Cyber-Savvy Teens (fwd)

Another from the same list.

From: Nancy Willard <nwillard@csriu.org>

I have a special announcement to make. Today my new book for parents: Cyber-Safe Kids, Cyber-Savvy Teens, has been released. Just checked, it is for sale on Amazon for $10.17. The press announcement is below.

Also my new web site for this book is up (not yet totally complete). The URL is http://cskcst.com/. On this web site I have free reproducible booklets for parents and teens. These are Web 2.0 focused Internet safety. (However, I am planning to add one more panel in the teen guide. Each panel has 4 topics and I figured out 4 additional topics I should cover. So check back in a week or so.) I am also going to be starting a blog addressing Youth Risk Online.

For those of you who would be inclined, :-) I would sure appreciate a rating/review on either Amazon or B&N.

Thanks.

Nancy (Who is actually thinking of taking a vacation with my kids during Spring Break having written 2 books in the last 18 months.)

CYBER-SAFE KIDS, CYBER-SAVVY TEENS: Helping Young People Learn to Use the Internet Safely and Responsibly By Nancy Willard

In a recent study, 81% of parents felt their children were not careful enough when sharing information about themselves online and 79% of these children agreed. Whatıs even more troubling is the fact that most teens say parents havenıt educated them about concerns related to the Internet.

With CYBER-SAFE KIDS, CYBER-SAVVY TEENS: Helping Young People Learn to Use the Internet Safely and Responsibly (Wiley, April 2007, $14.95) Internet safety expert Nancy Willard gives parents the tools they need to help keep children and teens safe from online threats such as sexual predators, pornography, hate groups, and cyberbullies and encourage responsible online behavior.

Today, the many stories in the media about Internet threats have caused parents to become increasingly aware of risks related to Internet use by children and teens. But parents are also aware of the many positive aspects of the Internet and the importance of these technologies in the lives of their children now and into the future.

CYBER-SAFE KIDS, CYBER-SAVVY TEENS is a guide for parents of todayıs totally wired children and teens. Parents know how to help their children avoid risks and engage in responsible behavior in real life. Willard provides the insight into online risks and practical strategies to help parents translate effective parenting skills into the online world helping parents learn how to provide their children with the necessary information to understand the nature of the Internet and to make the same kinds of safe and responsible choices online that they would in real life.

A valuable resource for all parents, as well as for others who are responsible for the well-being of young people, CYBER-SAFE KIDS, CYBER-SAVVY TEENS will help them protect children and empower teens to use the Internet wisely and responsibly.

Nancy E. Willard, MS, JD (Eugene, OR) is an educator, lawyer, educational technology consultant, and parent. She has been involved in Internet planning in K-12 education for over a decade and is also the author of Cyberbullying and Cyberthreats.
