In grades 5 and 6, the reading block includes strategic reading instruction
with guided reading and independent reading/centers, and in grades 7 &8,
although it's supposed to be the same as far as guided reading, it's
somewhat more literature focused. Independent reading is a big part of class
time and I suspect it will continue to be.
