And it has the word Ice in the title. I have it in my office!! It's published by Scholastic.
I meant to respond to this post earlier. I picked up two books at NCTE in November that might be good. One is Forbidden SChoolhouse by Suzanne Jurmain. It is about a woman who wanted to create a private school for African American girls in Connecticut. The other one was on Hitler Youth, and I can't find it here at home, so I must have taken it to work. You might also look at The Boys War, published by Scholastic. It is about boys who served in both the union and confederate armies during the civil war. There's also Immigrant Kids, again published by Scholastic which is about, um, immigrant children working in factories and mines at the turn of the century. You might check out Amistad Rising. I don't remember the author or publisher.

there's a version of the shackleton story geared toward middle school that
is very good, but i can't find it on the internet and can't remember the
title - only the cover, white, with little men at the bottom.
