It's Shipwreck at the Bottom of the World, by Jennifer Armstrong It takes a while for the kids to really get into it. They need some background knowledge/guidance in the beginning. But then they do like it. An even lower level title about the same journey is Trial by Ice, a Photobiography of Sir Ernet Shackleton.
I also like the __Lives of _______________ (and what the neighbors thought__. For example Lives of Extraordinary Women" Rulers, Rebels (and What the Neighbors Thought). There's one entitlesd Lives of the Presidents (and what the neighbors thought). Fun, informative and interesting. Kathleen Krull has a whole series.
You might try some Jim Murphy books, like The Great Fire. Or those the Life or Century books for Young People that came out aroudn teh turn fo the century.
Just some ideas.

there's a version of the shackleton story geared toward middle school that
is very good, but i can't find it on the internet and can't remember the
title - only the cover, white, with little men at the bottom.
