Re: poetry idea to remember

SOAR! is a not-for-profit adult and family literacy program. I retired from teaching last May and now direct the SOAR! program. I really like it. My job is to recruit students and tutors, match them up, and get out of the way.

We do a dictionary project for third graders where I go into every third grade classroom in the county, give all the kids a dictionary and do a short lesson on using it.Then we have Put Your Nose in A Book for all first graders. I recruit readers and we go into all the first grade classrooms wearing clown noses, give noses to the kids, and we all put our noses in a book--the community reader reads to them and talks to them about the book and about reading with their parents or siblings. This year we got a grant and were able to give all the kids a copy of the book. They were really excited.
