Re: book like The Greatest by Meyers
Nancy:
What about We Beat the Streets, the younger version of The Pact, with a
forward by Sharon draper? It's about the boys in NJ who made the pact
to help keep each other out of trouble, ultimately successful, but with
some blips in teh road?

Subject: [middle-lit] book like The Greatest by Meyers
I teach a boy (10th grade alternative high school) who
is having a lot of trouble visualizing when he reads.
He can decode but with little comprehension. He chose
and read The Greatest by Walter Dean Meyers earlier
this fall and loved it. He wrote long book letters
with summary and in-depth responses, thanking me
profusely for recommending the book. If only it were
always so easy . . . . Now he's faltering and can't
find another book. He tried fiction, both Harris and
Me and Crash, but I think the characters are too
young, and he's not engaged at all. He's really not a
fiction kind-of-guy, I think, too.
I've checked Amazon for related books, and I have
Kylene Beers When Children Can't Read out, looking at
her recommended Biog-Autobio list. Now I'm turning
to you out in middle-lit land (at least those of you
not in Nashville) to find out which titles similar to
The Greatest have you have had success with,
especially with older boys? (This is for independent
reading.)
I will appreciate any help.
Nancy
