I call it "modeling."

Friends,
I have enjoyed the discussion on Atwell letters, etc. Thanks. I have a new
question for you. Is there some literary term for asking students to write
poem similar to another poem, including similes and metaphors in the same
positions, etc? I just asked my students to write a poem similar to the one we
read in class. I am just wondering if there is another term besides "similar"
that I can use. One student wrote a really nice version, and I would like to
try this again, but just wondered about a term for it. Thanks.
