1E1E,6666,AEAE Negative Portrayal of Homeschooler on PBS/Action Needed!

Posted by: "Tracie and Robin" DengaFamily@aol.com dengafamily

ATTENTION HOME SCHOOLERS! ACTION NEEDED!

If you haven't seen any of the one minute WordGirl shorts throughout

the PBS KIDS GO! weekday programming or the two minute WordGirl

episodes which air after the very popular Maya & Miguel show on your

local PBS station, please take a moment to visit the PBS KIDS

website to view the negative portrayal of home schooled students

that is being espoused in this programming. The link to the website

is:

http://pbskids. org/wordgirl/

Click on the left side "Heroes, Villains & Mere Mortals" then select

the character "Tobey". Here's the character description from the

website:

"Tobey is a 10-year-old home schooled genius who causes serious

property damage in order to get WordGirl's attention, not that he'd

ever admit it. He's a master of robotics, building giant robots to

do his bidding. He's constantly trying to prove that he is

WordGirl's intellectual superior, and that he isn't afraid of his

mommy."

In one episode, there is a comment about Tobey that "he's so timid

that he has a hard time making friends." In the same episode, Tobey

also acts very rude and destructive. You can see this episode and

others (they are all only a minute or so long) by going to the same

website link above and clicking on "Adventures of WordGirl" on the

left side of the webpage, and then when the "Choose a Character"

screen comes up, select "Tobey" and then click on the first picture

under "Choose an Episode" at the bottom of the screen (it's the one

with the robot picture).

Scholastic's choice to portray this intelligent, yet socially inept

and deviant character as a home schooled student is a glaring attack

on home schooling and educational choice. Scholastic would not have

dared to portray this character as a racial minority or as a

homosexual, yet they feel at liberty to attack home schooled

students and indirectly their parents who they imply are making

social misfits out of their children by teaching them at home. This

programming is seen by thousands of children every day and is a

means of influencing their attitudes toward home schooled students.

As the saying goes, "If you say it loud enough and long enough, the

people will believe it." There is no evidence to support the

socialization concern in regards to home schooled students, yet the

educational establishment continues with this propaganda.

Even if your children do not watch PBS, please contact Scholastic

Media (the creators of the WordGirl cartoon) and Scholastic

Corporation (the owner of Scholastic Media) and let them know your

feelings about their choice to portray this socially

deviant "villain" as a home schooled student. We need to stop the

continued insinuations by the educational establishment that home

schooling results in a lack of social aptitude. Insist that

Scholastic Media stop making episodes with Tobey and also mention

that you will not be purchasing any more of Scholastic's educational

books or products until you see that they have removed this

character from the WordGirl episodes.

In addition, please contact your local PBS station and ask that they

stop airing the WordGirl episodes that involve Tobey and remove them

from their website. Emphasize that the portrayal of Tobey as a

socially deviant home schooled student is a direct attack on home

schooled students and their families. If you happen to be a

financial supporter of your local PBS station, make sure to mention

this fact to them and tell them that you cannot support a station

that airs such programming.

Hi there,

I am so sorry but I forgot to include the second trip for March in the
newsletter! I've just been running 100 mph and forgot. So, as noted in the
newsletter, the first trip on March 7 is to Mrs. Grossman's Sticker
Factory...you can visit the website at www.mrsgrossman.com and see
newsletter for details. This is a scheduled tour that I set up in advance,
so I can fit maybe one or two small families more.

The second trip for March is on the 21st and it is to the Jelly Belly
Factory (yes, March is factory visiting month, I guess). Here, you can
watch Jelly Belly candies being made, get information, learn trivia and see
the factory at work. This is a 40 minute walking tour and it's free...we'll
meet at 1 pm. Please rsvp to me at joye@barnettsolutionsgroup.com by March
19th. Jelly Belly is located at One Jelly Belly Lane, Fairfield, CA.
800-953-5592.

Thanks!

Having attended the performance of Halau at the Wells Fargo educational series, I thought people might be interested in a local hula class. It is taught in Calistoga weekly on Sundays. Once a month their Kumu comes from Hawaii and they have an open class for newcomers to check out. The next time Kumu comes will be this Sunday, March 4th (usually the first Sun. of the month). Classes start at 12:30 and are held at the Calistoga Community Center, on Lincoln between Washington and Fairway.
I recommend that even adults start with the children's class to learn the beginning steps. Plan to spend at least 2-3 hours, but I strongly recommend staying til the end of the day for a potluck (bring food to share). You can come and observe, but I strongly recommend participating. There is a drop in fee of $20 per participant. You should wear loose clothing (recommend layers) and a water bottle. You will dance in bare feet. \
If you need more information you can contact me, Pauline Darrow lovinglife101@sbcglobal.net or the local hula teacher, Kathleen Morgen at kathleendiane@mchsi.com Hope to see you.

Hi Everybody,

My cousin is seriously considering homeschooling her two kids, ages 15 and
12 ½ (boy and girl respectively). They have always schooled, mostly
alternative schools. They are currently attending the Rincon Valley
schools and nobody in the family is enjoying the experience. My cousin has
watched me homeschool these past few years, but older kids have much
different needs from my younger guys. She has some serious questions about
the JC, college apps (saw the piece Jason Weaver posted) and social
opportunities.

I know how busy everybody is, but I would appreciate it if any of you who
homeschool older kids would be will to either email her or talk to her on
the phone. I will give her the names of the SCHA county contacts, but it?s
a big county and I know she?d love to know that there is a teen
homeschooling community.

My cousin is Robin Levander and her email address is Levander@sonic.net.
Please contact her off list.

Thanks so much.

Hi there, my son Grover is looking to meet some other
teens (age 12 and up) that are homeschooled. We have
been discussing starting a casual, teen group that
meets twice a month at our home (probably Thursday
afternoons).

I am just looking to see what kind of interest there
is out there. Grover is thinking to have different
themes like trading music, watching a movie, cooking
days(we love to cook), art days, going rock climbing,
etc.

If you have a teen looking for some "cool" things to
do, then let us know. Please email me with any
comments or questions. Thanks, Lisa and Grover

If you were considering sending off your 13 to 18 year old to NBTSC, I'd like to point out that there is a financial deadline rapidly approaching...after March 31 the price goes up to $580 per session. If you can get your forms postmarked by March 31 you get a $50 discount per session. You can register on line and download the forms you need to sign at www.nbtsc.org

My daughter India has an essay on the camp posted on her blog Gnomie Girl
if you'd like a personal account. Feel free to call me if you have questions you don't see answered on the nbtsc website.
