In Media Res--Katrina and New Orleans
Submitted by GeorgiaHedrick on 12 September, 2005 - 09:15It breaks my heart. They did the thing that always bothered me the most: The Sisters were the first to leave the city. Back when Betsy hit, I asked, why aren't we 'out there' helping? So I was sent to scrub some flooded, now receded waters, of a back room of the Sisters' house in Arabi. It made me angry when I was 22. I didn't take a Vow to wash the back walls of a house. I took a vow to Serve the Poor. And I didn't even know where they were. Big secret back then. Not now. Back in the 20's, all the Sisters of every Order stayed. When the cholora epidemic hit, they stayed and helped. They were THERE! It's why every Sister rides free on every bus and trolley in New Orleans. It's the city's thank you.

Bush Vacation
Submitted by eric on 10 September, 2005 - 10:56I got this from a friend. Not sure the original source. Obviously somebody has been doing a little photoshopping, but the message is true if the portrayal isn't quite accurate. Bush Sr. and Bush Jr. both took political damage for taking too lightly the vast damage of hurricanes, Andrew and Katrina respectively.

The Wolves (and one Coyote) at the Door
Submitted by eric on 27 August, 2005 - 16:07It was the best stick I could find, plucked from a discarded fake Christmas tree left beside the road to wither (if plastic can be said to wither). You can see from the look of terror on my face that I'm not entirely confident the weapon will be up to the task of turning back the ravenous pack!
You can also see why as a general policy I leave the cartoon construction to Georgia!
(This, by the way, was produced in response a request posted to engteach-talk after I posted one of my regular "past the hat" message asking for donations to Interversity. I'm afraid I whined a bit about my financial straits, which are dire at the moment, and complained about the wolves at my door (though in truth, most of them use the phone these days). In case you were wondering what drove me to attempt artwork.)
Always Searching...
Submitted by frstbrn24 on 26 August, 2005 - 07:59Teachers are always searching for ways to improve thier teaching, for ways to reach their students. Literacy With An Attitude shocked me... and it did open my eyes. I look around at our building and my classroom with a new perspective and new goals.
I found a book called QUANTUM TEACHING: ORCHESTRATING STUDENT SUCCESS...which has truly turned out to be a wonderful resource.
Quantum Teaching embodies five tenets:
- Everything Speaks, including classroom environment, body language, design of lessons and handouts, etc.
- Everything is On Purpose, as teachers carefully orchestrate their lessons.
Who needed this? Not kids, for sure
Submitted by GeorgiaHedrick on 23 August, 2005 - 14:32Teacher-bashers forget: it's the kids that NCLB is attacking. It's the kids who ultimately suffer.

In Media Res--Changing cultures has its effects on everything one does.
Submitted by GeorgiaHedrick on 22 August, 2005 - 14:25I read the info on the Eng-Teach listserv about kids of poverty and the clientel they become and what happens to what they learn within their own heads. I thought instantly of the first year of being 'out'. I took a Class at the University of UMSL in St. Louis. At that time it was the first month I was 'out'. School was always an equalizer for me so I took a geology class. But somehow, someway, nothing made sense to me. I didn't want to ask questions anymore. If felt different. I was afraid. I didn't want anyone to make friends with me. I didn't want to have to explain anything. I didnt' want anyone to feel sorry for me.

There are some things King George does well; he has done it all his life.
Submitted by GeorgiaHedrick on 22 August, 2005 - 14:10Problem is: he has done it to others, and never to himself, all his life.

Remember music? Remember all the arts? Remember when we taught them?
Submitted by GeorgiaHedrick on 16 August, 2005 - 11:53There's a whole new song playing these days, and kids really don't understand why.
